What is Foam Sclerotherapy?

Foam sclerotherapy is a specialized non-invasive treatment designed to address varicose veins by injecting a foam-based sclerosing agent directly into the affected veins, which forces the vein to close and blood to re-route to alternative healthy veins.

What to expect.

The process begins with a thorough evaluation using ultrasound imaging to identify the problematic veins. Ultrasound is also used during the procedure to ensure accuracy. During the treatment, a sclerosing agent—usually a detergent solution—is combined with air or another gas to create a foam. This foam is then injected into the targeted veins through a fine needle (see: fig 1 & 2).

The foam expands and adheres to the vein walls, causing irritation that leads to the vein walls sticking together and sealing off the vein. Over time, the closed vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body's natural processes. The procedure is minimally invasive, requiring no incisions and typically involves only mild discomfort.

Post treatment.

Patients are advised to wear compression stockings to aid in the healing process and to follow specific aftercare guidelines to optimize results and minimize potential side effects and reoccurances.

Foam sclerotherapy is effective in reducing the appearance of unsightly veins, relieving symptoms such as aching and swelling, and improving overall vascular health.
