Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency.

The EVLT procedure is not covered by OHIP and is considered an out-of-pocket procedure, but it may be covered by your private insurance provider. There are many benifits to the less invasive EVLT procedure over traditional vein stripping surgery and generally results in minimal scarring and a much faster recovery time.

The process begins by scheduling a venous insufficiency ultrasound at Greater Niagara Medical Imaging (GNMI), once the results of that ultrasound have been read we will schedule an second in-office ultrasound preformed by Dr Rammohan and his ultrasound technician which allows the doctor to assess the situation and decide on the proper course of action. Once the descion to go with the EVLT procedure has been made, the patient will return to our office for the procedure, which generally takes 1-2hours depending on the severity of the case. With the patient lying down, the affected vein area is cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia. Under ultrasound guidance, a guidewire is inserted into the vein, followed by the placement of a laser fiber. The laser is then activated to heat and seal the vein walls, causing the vein to collapse and reroute blood flow to healthier veins.

After removing the catheter and guidewire, 20-30mmHg rated thigh high compression sock are applied for the first 48 hours. After the initial 48hours passes, the compression stockings are worn daily to help with closure of the treated vein. EVLT allows for outpatient treatment with minimal recovery time, making it a preferred choice over traditional surgical methods for varicose vein treatment.

EVLT is considered effective in treating varicose veins and can provide long-term relief from symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discomfort associated with venous insufficiency.
